Development week 5 links.

Thanks to the wonderful Helen (who has also posted below) I can now post everything properly.

I don't know if anyone managed to see what i put before so i will repost it.

I have found a video on World systems theory which is a important theory especially as the terminology used in this theory seems to be widely used by authors discussing development.

The video can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DokCX7RRbo8&feature=results_main&playnext=1&list=PL6FA802917BD9BBE8&noredirect=1

He speaks a little slow and is also a little biased at the end but overall i think it is a useful introduction to the theory.

I have also found a video on Trickle down economics which will come up in our presentation and is linked to laissez-faire economics and is closely associated with Reagen as the video will show

This video can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qwOEXA9tnbY
I would also like to direct people to the Human development indexes website (http://hdr.undp.org/en/statistics/) which i know came up in week two but will also come up on Thursday. This is because the human development indicators are a useful way of measuring development and take into account social factors so are a less narrow measurment then just lookign at economic factors. They also show what people have considered important to development.

One of the things we will be talking about on Thursday is dependancy theory and within this does aid work.

The BBC has argued both sides which i've provided links to

For: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/4210122.stm

against: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/4209956.stm

If you look at who the authors are their views are pretty much what you expect.

I have also found a report (found here: http://www.ipc-undp.org/pub/IPCPovertyInFocus12.pdf ) gives good arguments on both sides, though is alot to read pages 3-9 are the main reason i'm including it.

Lastly there is a journal article on aid. Unfortunately you have to be a subscriber to see it but the abstract gives a good outline and names some thinkers so i thought it may still be useful to post.

That can be found here: http://www.prospectmagazine.co.uk/2005/05/6869-doesaidwork/

I hope these links work, please just let me know if they don't.

We will be providing a handout, though i will only be able to make 4 copies so it might be easiest to split the class  into 4 groups. We will be asking the class several questions:

  •  Why did America pursue international development in 1949?
  • Why might governments need to undergo political development to achieve modernisation
  • Is Globalisation a new phenomenon?
  • Why is the giving of aid controversial?

If you have questions about anything we've posted just ask though as Helen says we will be goign through everythign on Thursday.
